Easter 2026 in the Smokies: Sunrise Services, New Attractions, and Travel Tips

Welcome to your spring guide for the Great Smoky Mountains! I’m Seemore Bear, and this week we’re covering everything from historic Easter traditions to major new developments coming in 2026.

A New Era for the Smoky Mountain Opry Property

If you’ve driven into Pigeon Forge lately, you’ve likely noticed the old

Smoky Mountain Opry building sitting quiet. That’s about to change. A new developer has officially inked the deal on the property. While the specific name of the new attraction is still under wraps, its location at the city’s “front door” suggests something massive is coming to welcome the millions of tourists visiting the Smokies.

Fly Like a Butterfly: Dolly-Themed Fan Flights

You can’t talk about the Smokies without mentioning Dolly Parton! For the ultimate superfan, Allegiant Air has added a second Dolly-themed fan flight. The first one sold out almost instantly, so if you want this unique experience for the 2026 season, book your tickets on Allegiant soon.

The 25th Annual Easter Sunrise Service at Ober Mountain

This weekend marks a marquee event: the Easter Sunrise Service on top of Ober Gatlinburg. This 25-year tradition is the unofficial kickoff of spring.

  • Free Transportation: The aerial tramway in downtown Gatlinburg is free for all attendees.
  • Timing: Trams start departing at 5:00 AM, with the last one leaving at 6:00 AM sharp to ensure everyone is at the summit for the 6:30 AM service.
  • Pro Tip: Dress for February, not April! It can be significantly colder on top of the mountain than it is on the Parkway.

Spring Weather and Travel Forecast

We are expecting a beautiful spring weekend with temperatures reaching around 72°F, though you should check the forecast for potential light rain before planning a major hike.

Navigating the Gatlinburg Spur

Road construction is ongoing, but there is good news: crews are pausing single-lane closures for the Easter travel window through April 10th.

Local Tip for Avoiding Traffic:
If you want to skip the bumper-to-bumper traffic on 441, park in Pigeon Forge and take the Spur Express trolley. For just a few dollars, these shuttles use bypass lanes to get you into town while you enjoy the river views instead of brake lights.
