COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — Hiking prevails as one of Cocke County’s biggest draws in tourism, known as the “Adventure Side of the Smokies.”

Between three rivers, a national forest and a national park, there is an abundance of recreational activities in the area, according to the Cocke County Partnership Tourism Director, Linda Lewanski.

“So I think that sets us apart is that it’s a real — we say it’s the ‘real deal,’” said Lewanski.

Authenticity is the word she said she would use to describe her side of the Smokies.

“People in today’s world are really craving the authentic experience,” said Lewanski.

From rafting down a river, to strolling through a forest, she said Cocke County offers a bit of everything for anyone looking to visit.

“We say from ‘mild to wild,’ so if you’re a grandma, come on, but if you’re really wanting some thrills, that’s great too,” said Lewanski.

With Cosby also serving as a gateway into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Lewanski said recreation is one of the biggest draws to the area.

In talking to visitors, they add that it’s a way for them to reconnect with nature.

“Nature, and waterfalls, and butterflies and flowers,” said visitors Phyllis Baker and Jan Garwood.

Traveling in from Indiana, the friends said they chose this corner of the Smokies to fulfill, at least in part, a lifelong dream.

“The Smokies are beautiful, and, you know, we decided we’re going to we have to do some of  the Appalachian Trail. I mean, even if it’s an hour on it, we’re going walk it,” said Baker.

Lewanski said Cocke County ranks 32 out of 95 counties in the state for its tourism impact and visitor spending, and tourism is one of Cocke County’s largest economic drivers.

“It’s just a place for everything, people will love all the things there are to do in our surrounding counties, but then they want to just have a little more laid back day, a more authentic experience, they come over here, so we’re happy to have them come,” she said.

She added that the area also offers a number of birding, camping, and glamping opportunities, and a unique drive-through safari.
